About Bamberg

Welcome to Bamberg, a town in Franconia, in the north of Bavaria, on the river Regnitz, a few kilometres before it joins the Main. With about eighty thousand people it is not a large town. But because it was largely spared in the Second World War, its old town has kept its medieval and Baroque streets, and since 1993 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bamberg owes its rise to the emperor Henry the Second, who founded the diocese here in 1007 and is buried in the cathedral with his wife Kunigunde. For about eight centuries the town was ruled by its prince-bishops, until 1803. It is built on seven hills, crowned by churches and a castle, and it is sometimes called the Franconian Rome.

The town has three parts. The hill town of the bishops, with the cathedral, the Old Court and the New Residence. The island town of the citizens, between two arms of the river. And the gardeners' town, where market gardens are still worked inside the city. Together they form the World Heritage Site.

In the raids of 1944 and 1945, about four percent of the town was destroyed, and three hundred and seventy-eight civilians died. So its streets still show more than a thousand years of history. That history also has dark pages, among them the witch trials of the seventeenth century, when hundreds of people were accused and put to death.

Start at the Old Town Hall, which stands in the river, and walk to Little Venice, the row of fishermen's houses. Climb up through the Sand district to the cathedral, with its famous Horseman, and visit the Old Court and the rose garden of the New Residence. Look across to the abbey on the Michaelsberg, and find the Obere Pfarre on its hill.

Bamberg is also a town of beer. It has eleven breweries, and two of them, the Schlenkerla and the Spezial, still smoke their own malt to make Rauchbier, smoked beer. Try a glass, walk through the gardeners' town, and climb to the Altenburg for the widest view. And pause at the memorial to the victims of the witch trials.

In August the town celebrates the Sandkerwa, its biggest folk festival, and in Advent a trail of nativity scenes leads through the streets. Take your time in the lanes, cross the bridges, and enjoy discovering Bamberg.
