About Bamberg Cathedral

Bamberg Cathedral, the four-towered church consecrated in 1237, with the mysterious Bamberg Horseman, the tomb of Emperor Henry II and Kunigunde by Riemenschneider, and the only papal tomb in Germany.

Emperor Henry II founded the diocese in 1007, and his first cathedral was consecrated in 1012. The present church was built from about 1200 and consecrated on 6 May 1237, Henry's birthday. Inside stand the Bamberg Horseman, whose rider is still unknown, the tomb of Henry and his wife Kunigunde by Tilman Riemenschneider, and the tomb of Pope Clement II.

The cathedral is open daily, but services always come first, so visits can stop at short notice. In the warmer months a short organ concert is played at midday, with a quiet time before it.
