About New Residence and Rose Garden
The New Residence in Bamberg, the palace of the prince-bishops on the Domplatz, with more than forty state rooms, an Imperial Hall and a rose garden above the roofs of the old town.
The rear wings were built from 1604 to 1612, and the Baroque wings facing the square from 1697 to 1703, to plans by Leonhard Dientzenhofer. The Imperial Hall carries frescoes and sixteen portraits of emperors. The exiled King Otto of Greece and Queen Amalie lived here until their deaths. The rose garden, laid out in 1733, has about 4,500 roses.
The palace is open every day and needs a ticket; under-18s go free. The state rooms are shown on guided tours, and some rooms and the Old German Gallery are closed for renovation. The rose garden is open to the public, with few roses in late autumn.
Did you know? The exiled King Otto of Greece and Queen Amalie lived in the New Residence in Bamberg from 1863 until their deaths, after they lost the Greek throne.
