About Böttingerhaus and Villa Concordia

The Böttingerhaus and the Villa Concordia in Bamberg, two Baroque palaces built in the early eighteenth century for the same rising court official, one in a narrow lane and one on the river.

Johann Ignaz Tobias Böttinger, a privy councillor of middle-class origin, built the Böttingerhaus in the Judenstraße from 1707 to 1713, modelled on the palaces of Italy. In 1716 he began a second palace, the Concordia, rising straight from the Regnitz. Since the late 1990s the Concordia has been an international house for artists, run by the Free State of Bavaria.

The Böttingerhaus is private and holds galleries, so plan to see it from the lane. The Concordia's exhibitions and concerts are free but held on some days only; its river front can always be seen from the opposite bank.

Did you know? The Böttingerhaus in Bamberg, built from 1707 to 1713, grows richer in decoration with every storey, because its lane is so narrow and dark.
