About Gärtnerstadt (the Gardeners' Town)

The Gärtnerstadt of Bamberg, the gardeners' town, where market gardens and long narrow plots have been worked inside the city for more than six hundred years, part of the World Heritage site.

With the hill town and the island town, the gardeners' town is one of the three parts of the World Heritage site. Gardeners are recorded here by 1450, and Bamberg was long known for its liquorice, its onions and the Hörnla potato. The Gärtner- und Häckermuseum, in a gardener's house of the eighteenth century, shows the life of a gardening family around 1900.

The streets are public, but the gardens are private working land. The museum usually opens from spring to early November and is closed on Mondays.
