About Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus)

The Old Town Hall of Bamberg, standing in the river Regnitz between the hill town and the island town, with painted walls, Rococo balconies and a half-timbered house over the water.

A town hall stood here by the late 1380s; the present building took its shape in 1461 to 1467 and was remodelled in the Baroque and Rococo style in the 1740s and 1750s. Its walls carry painted columns and scenes, first painted around 1755 and largely repainted from 1959 to 1962. The little half-timbered Rottmeisterhäuschen dates from the fifteenth century.

The building is closed inside for renovation, and so is its porcelain collection, with no reopening date announced. You can see the outside at any time, from the two bridges and the river banks; works may put scaffolding on parts of it.

Did you know? The Old Town Hall of Bamberg stands on piers in the river Regnitz, between the hill town of the bishops and the island town of the citizens.
