About Obere Pfarre (Church of Our Lady)
The Obere Pfarre in Bamberg, the Gothic church of Our Lady on the Kaulberg, with a tall choir rising like a ship above the lanes, a Bridal Portal and a painting attributed to Tintoretto.
Building began in the fourteenth century, the nave was consecrated in 1387, and the high choir was begun in 1392. Inside, Baroque stucco of 1711 covers the nave, the high altar holds a walnut Madonna of about 1250, and an Assumption of Mary attributed to Tintoretto hangs here. Its tall tower once belonged to the town defences.
Opening hours are limited and not always regular, so the church may be closed on weekdays; check before you go. It is a working parish church, so visits stop during services.
Did you know? The Obere Pfarre in Bamberg is called the Upper Parish in contrast to the Lower Parish, the old church of Saint Martin, pulled down in 1805.
