About Memorial to the Victims of the Witch Trials
The memorial to the victims of the Bamberg witch trials, a steel plate with glowing burn-like holes unveiled in 2015, recalling the people accused, tortured and executed here in the seventeenth century.
In the Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg, persecution came in waves from about 1612 and was worst from 1626 to 1631. The records are incomplete: scholars count from at least 642 to about 900 people executed, and the memorial speaks of about a thousand. In 1627 a special prison, the Drudenhaus, was built for the accused; a plaque in the Franz-Ludwig-Straße marks its site.
The memorial is an open-air work on a public square, free and open at all times. It was moved for building works, so it may stand at Schönleinsplatz or behind Schloss Geyerswörth; check before you go. This is a place of remembrance.
Did you know? The Bamberg witch-trial memorial, unveiled on 2 August 2015, is a steel plate with glowing holes like burns, called Brandmal, the brand mark.
