About Michaelsberg Abbey

Michaelsberg Abbey in Bamberg, a former Benedictine abbey founded in 1015 on one of the seven hills, with a church painted with a Garden of Heaven, reopened in 2026 after fourteen years of restoration.

The abbey was founded in 1015 by Bishop Eberhard and dissolved in 1803; its buildings now house a home for the elderly, a brewery museum and terraced gardens. The church can be visited on guided tours from Friday to Sunday and on holidays, and these must be booked ahead. The brewery museum keeps its own opening days. The way up the hill is steep.
