About Sandstraße and the Sand District
The Sandstraße in Bamberg, the main street of the old Sand district below the cathedral hill, lined with old houses, small shops and Franconian taverns, and the heart of the Sandkerwa festival.
The Obere Sandstraße begins at the Katzenberg, a steep little square just below the cathedral square, and runs on as the Untere Sandstraße towards the Markusbrücke. The Sand district lies between the small arm of the Regnitz and the hills, and it is often described as the core of the old town. Every August it is the centre of the Sandkerwa, the largest folk festival of Bamberg.
The street is open at all times. Each tavern has its own hours, and many close one day a week. The cobbles and the Katzenberg are steep.
Did you know? The Sandkerwa, the largest folk festival of Bamberg, is held every August around the Sandstraße, organised by a citizens' association founded in 1891.
