About Schlenkerla and Bamberg Rauchbier
The Schlenkerla in Bamberg, a historic brewery tavern in a half-timbered house first recorded in 1405, where Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier, a smoked beer, is tapped from oak barrels.
Bamberg is famous for Rauchbier, beer brewed with malt dried over beechwood fires, which gives it a smoky taste. Schlenkerla and one other Bamberg brewery still smoke their own malt in the old way. The tavern belongs to the Heller brewery, run by the same family since 1866, and its nickname goes back to a brewmaster said to have swung his arms as he walked.
The tavern is open every day. It is often full, with shared tables and a queue in the street. Ask for the Märzen, the classic smoked beer, served from the barrel.
