About Karlovy Vary & the Spa Triangle
Welcome to Karlovy Vary, in German Karlsbad, in the west of Bohemia, about a hundred kilometres west of Prague. The town of about forty-nine thousand people lies where the river Teplá flows into the Ohře, in a deep, wooded valley. Its name means Charles's Baths, and for centuries people have come here to drink and bathe in its hot springs.
Tradition says that Emperor Charles the Fourth found the hot spring during a hunt from his castle at Loket, in the fourteenth century; in the oldest version of the story, a hunting dog fell into the water. A settlement grew here from about 1349, and in 1370 Charles gave it the rights of a town. More than eighty springs rise in the valley, and about fifteen of them are open for drinking.
The spa grew slowly at first, and then very fast. In the season of 1756 there were a hundred and thirty-four families of guests; by the end of the nineteenth century there were about twenty-six thousand guests a year. Peter the Great, Goethe, Beethoven and Chopin are among the famous visitors. In 1819 a meeting of ministers here led to the Carlsbad Decrees, rules of censorship for the German states.
For centuries most of the townspeople spoke German. In 1938, under the Munich Agreement, the town was annexed to Nazi Germany. After the war, most of its German-speaking people were expelled, and new residents came. The spa lived on, and since 1946 the town has also been home to an international film festival, held each July.
In 2021 Karlovy Vary became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Great Spa Towns of Europe, together with its neighbours Mariánské Lázně and Františkovy Lázně. Walk along the Teplá and you see why: colonnades of stone, wood, iron and glass, pastel spa houses, grand hotels and churches, all fitted into a narrow valley.
Start at the Hot Spring, the Vřídlo, and walk along the colonnades with a spa cup in your hand. Visit the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene, the Imperial Spa and the Grandhotel Pupp. Ride the funicular up to the Diana tower, see the golden domes of the Russian church, and learn the stories of Becherovka and of Moser glass.
Then go further, to the castle of Loket on its rock above the river, and to the spa towns of Mariánské Lázně and Františkovy Lázně. Take your time, sip slowly, and enjoy discovering Karlovy Vary.
