About Loket Castle and Town (Elbogen)
Loket, a small town in a tight bend of the river Ohře near Karlovy Vary, crowned by a royal Gothic castle on a granite rock once called the key to the Kingdom of Bohemia.
The castle was built in the second half of the twelfth century and took most of its present form in the 1390s. Charles IV was held here as a small child and stayed here later as emperor. From 1792 to 1948 part of it was a prison; today it is a museum with a Romanesque rotunda, a porcelain exhibition and old prison rooms.
The castle is open every day, with shorter hours in winter. Repairs to the roof may limit parts of the courtyard. Loket lies about ten kilometres south-west of Karlovy Vary, and its old town is easy to walk in about an hour.
Did you know? Loket takes its name from the Czech word for elbow, after the tight bend of the river Ohře that surrounds the town on three sides.
