About Prizren
Welcome to Prizren, in the south of Kosovo, at the foot of the Sharr mountains. Its old town spreads along both banks of the river Lumbardhi, under a fortress on the hill. Minarets and church towers rise side by side over red-tiled roofs, and in the cafés around the old square you may hear Albanian, Turkish, Bosnian and other languages of the town.
Prizren's history is long and layered. The fortress hill was used in the Bronze Age and rebuilt in Byzantine times. In the fourteenth century the town flourished under Serbian rulers, who built churches and monasteries here. From 1455 it was an Ottoman city for more than four centuries, and its mosques, baths and bridges date from that time. In 1878 Albanian leaders founded the League of Prizren here, a key moment in Albanian national history.
The town has known hard times too. It suffered in the war of 1998 and 1999, and in the unrest of March 2004 several of its religious buildings were damaged. Many have since been restored.
We will climb to the fortress, visit the Sinan Pasha Mosque, cross the Stone Bridge and sit in the Shadërvan square. We will see the church of Our Lady of Ljeviš, the League of Prizren museum, the hammam, the Catholic cathedral and the Holy Archangels Monastery, walk along the river in Marash and discover silver filigree. Then we will go further, to the Old Bazaar of Gjakova and the monastery of Visoki Dečani.
The old town is compact and easy to walk, but the fortress climb is steep. In August the Dokufest film festival fills the streets. Many religious sites have special rules, so dress modestly and check access before you go. Welcome to Prizren.
