About Holy Archangels Monastery

The Holy Archangels Monastery in the Bistrica gorge south-east of Prizren, founded by the Serbian ruler Stefan Dušan in the 1340s, now ruins beside a small living monastery.

Stefan Dušan, king and from 1346 emperor of the Serbs, founded the monastery between 1343 and 1352 and was buried here in 1355. After the Ottoman conquest of 1455 it fell into ruin, and tradition says its stone was later used for the Sinan Pasha Mosque.

Foundations of two churches, carved stones and a medieval bridge lie by the river, next to a small monastic community. The site was burned in 1999 and in March 2004. It is guarded by Kosovo police: bring ID and dress modestly.
