About Prizren Silver Filigree
Prizren's silver filigree, lace-like jewellery made by hand from hair-fine silver threads, a craft of the old bazaar for centuries that now survives in a few workshops and shops.
Filigree is made from fine twisted threads and tiny grains of silver, shaped with tweezers and soldered with a flame into lace-like patterns. Local historians trace Prizren's goldsmiths back to the Middle Ages, and the craft flourished in the 19th and 20th centuries.
After 1945 many craftsmen worked in the Filigran cooperative, which once had about 150 artisans; by 2024 only a handful remained. Look for filigree in the shops of the old bazaar around Shadërvan, and ask about quality and hallmarks.
Did you know? The word filigree comes from the Latin filum, thread, and granum, grain; Prizren's craftsmen twist hair-fine silver threads by hand into lace-like patterns.
