About Marash

Marash, the shady riverside quarter of Prizren below the fortress, where the Lumbardhi leaves its gorge, home of a protected plane tree more than 400 years old and summer festival nights.

Marash lies on the left bank of the Lumbardhi, where the river comes out of its gorge into the old town. Its great oriental plane tree, more than 400 years old, has been protected since 1959. Poplars and lindens shade the riverside promenade.

In summer the cafés and terraces fill, and during the Dokufest film festival in early August Marash hosts open-air music nights. The quarter is free and open at all times; check dokufest.com for the next festival dates.

Did you know? The great oriental plane tree of Marash is thought to be more than 400 years old and has been protected by law as a natural monument since 1959.
