About Visoki Dečani Monastery

Visoki Dečani, a Serbian Orthodox monastery of 1327-1335 near Deçan/Dečani, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a marble church and more than a thousand fresco scenes.

King Stefan Dečanski began the church in 1327, and the Franciscan master builder Fra Vita of Kotor finished it about eight years later. Its walls are banded in white and pink marble, and painters covered the interior with over a thousand scenes from the late 1330s.

UNESCO inscribed it in 2004, and since 2006 it is part of Medieval Monuments in Kosovo, on the list of heritage in danger. International KFOR troops guard it: bring your passport for the checkpoint, dress modestly and check visiting times before you go.
