About Gjakova Old Bazaar

The Old Bazaar of Gjakova (Đakovica), an Ottoman market quarter of low timber shops along cobbled lanes around the Hadum Mosque of 1594, burned in 1999 and rebuilt in its old form.

The bazaar grew around the Hadum Mosque, founded in 1594-95 with a school, a library, an inn and shops. Its craftsmen made saddles, carpets, silver filigree and decorated guns, and in 1662 the traveller Evliya Çelebi counted some 300 shops.

The bazaar was burned during the 1999 war and rebuilt from about 2001 on its old plan. Gjakova is about 40 minutes by road from Prizren. The Hadum Mosque is a working mosque: visit outside prayer times and dress modestly.

Did you know? The Hadum Mosque at the heart of Gjakova's Old Bazaar was founded in 1594-95 together with a school, a library, a bath, an inn and shops.
