About Our Lady of Ljeviš

Our Lady of Ljeviš, a five-domed Serbian Orthodox church rebuilt in 1306-1307 with fine 14th-century frescoes, part of the UNESCO Medieval Monuments in Kosovo; usually seen only from outside.

King Stefan Milutin had the church rebuilt in 1306-1307 over an earlier church, and Byzantine painters decorated it with frescoes. Under Ottoman rule it became a mosque and its frescoes were plastered over; it became a church again in 1912.

It was set on fire and badly damaged in the unrest of March 2004 and has since been restored. In 2006 it joined the UNESCO site Medieval Monuments in Kosovo, listed as in danger. The church is guarded and usually locked; plan to see the outside.

Did you know? Our Lady of Ljeviš was rebuilt in 1306-1307 for the Serbian king Stefan Milutin by a master builder named Nicholas, with five aisles under five domes.
