About Prizren Fortress
Prizren Fortress, the walls of Kalaja on the hill above the old town, used since the Bronze Age and rebuilt by Byzantines, Serbian rulers and Ottomans, with views over minarets and roofs.
People used this hill as early as about 2000 BC. The fort was rebuilt in the 6th century, held by Serbian rulers in the Middle Ages and taken by the Ottomans in the mid-15th century. Most of what you see is Ottoman, and it served as a fortress until 1912.
The walk up from the old town takes about 15 minutes on a steep lane. The ramparts give the best view of Prizren and the Sharr mountains, especially at sunset. Wear sturdy shoes; some areas may be fenced for conservation.
Did you know? The fortress hill of Prizren has been used since the Bronze Age, around 2000 BC, and was rebuilt by the Byzantine emperor Justinian in the 6th century.
