Day 1

Day 1 covers 8 stops over about 25 km as the crow flies, from Pigeon Valley (Güvercinlik Vadisi) to Paşabağ (Monks Valley). ≈ 25 km between stops, straight line

Morning

  1. Pigeon Valley (Güvercinlik Vadisi): A gorge between Uçhisar and Göreme whose soft tuff cliffs are honeycombed with carved dovecotes, built so villagers could harvest pigeon droppings to fertilise their fields and vineyards. 2.7 km to the next stop
  2. Göreme Open-Air Museum: A Byzantine monastic valley where entire churches, kitchens and dormitories were carved into soft volcanic rock, several chapels still lined with vivid frescoes of biblical scenes and haloed saints. 0.4 km to the next stop
  3. Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise): A domed rock-cut chapel whose single tiny window kept its New Testament frescoes so dark they never faded, which is exactly why they survive as Cappadocia's best-preserved painted interior. 2.6 km to the next stop
  4. Ortahisar Castle: A tall cone of rock riddled with rooms rises in the middle of Ortahisar. Once a Byzantine refuge, its cool caves still store apples, onions, and citrus. 4.4 km to the next stop

Afternoon

  1. Ürgüp: An old wine town in the heart of Cappadocia, Ürgüp gathers under Temenni Hill, with the Three Beauties fairy chimneys standing just up the road toward Göreme. 5.1 km to the next stop
  2. Devrent Valley (Imagination Valley / Hayal Vadisi): A small, unsettled valley near Zelve with no rock-cut churches at all, prized for eroded rocks that visitors read as animals, most famously a natural camel-shaped formation. 5.8 km to the next stop
  3. Avanos: Avanos sits where the Kızılırmak, the longest river running entirely within Turkey, bends past town, and its red silt becomes the clay that has kept local potters busy for centuries. 4.3 km to the next stop
  4. Paşabağ (Monks Valley): A small valley near Zelve famous for multi-capped 'mushroom' fairy chimneys with two or three heads, and a three-headed pillar holding a rock-cut chapel dedicated to St Simeon.

Day 2

Day 2 covers 7 stops over about 38 km as the crow flies, from Zelve Open-Air Museum to Derinkuyu Underground City. ≈ 38 km between stops, straight line

Morning

  1. Zelve Open-Air Museum: A cave town spread across three tuff valleys, lived in until 1952, with churches, dovecotes, a rock-cut mill and a small mosque hollowed from the same soft cliffs. 1 km to the next stop
  2. Çavuşin: An old cliff village bored into a long tuff ridge, home to two rock-cut churches of St John the Baptist and two painted angels bared by a collapsed wall. 2 km to the next stop
  3. Rose and Red Valleys (Güllüdere & Kızılçukur): Two adjoining valleys northeast of Göreme whose iron-banded cliffs glow pink and red at sunset, hiding rock-cut Byzantine churches including the Haçlı Kilise, or Church of the Cross. 2.4 km to the next stop
  4. Love Valley (Aşk Vadisi): A valley between Göreme and Uçhisar famous for unusually tall, slender fairy chimneys of tuff capped by basalt, and a prime vantage for sunrise balloons and sunset light. 3.6 km to the next stop

Afternoon

  1. Uçhisar Castle: A giant cone of volcanic rock honeycombed with rooms and passages instead of built walls, its open summit giving one of Cappadocia's widest views over the surrounding valleys. 19 km to the next stop
  2. Kaymaklı Underground City: Wider than it is deep, Kaymaklı spreads sideways through the rock: four open floors of stables, kitchens, storerooms, and wine presses laid out around tall ventilation shafts. 10 km to the next stop
  3. Derinkuyu Underground City: Carved about 85 metres into soft volcanic rock, Derinkuyu is commonly called the deepest of Cappadocia's underground cities: a whole hidden town sealed by rolling stone doors.

Distances are straight-line between stops; streets add a little.
