About Uçhisar Castle

A giant cone of volcanic rock honeycombed with rooms and passages instead of built walls, its open summit giving one of Cappadocia's widest views over the surrounding valleys.

Uçhisar Castle (Uçhisar Kalesi) is a towering natural cone of volcanic tuff at the heart of the town of Uçhisar in Nevşehir Province. Rather than a built fortress, it is a single rock outcrop, rising about sixty metres, that people honeycombed over centuries with rooms and passageways. The Turkish name means 'outer citadel'. Its summit is open to the public and gives panoramic views over the surrounding valleys and Göreme National Park.

The clearest evidence of settlement dates to the Roman and Byzantine periods, when the chambers served as dwellings and perhaps monastic quarters; in the seventh century the Byzantines used the area as a defensive buffer against Islamic expansion. A tunnel roughly a hundred metres long runs beneath the town centre, and a hard-to-reach sixth-century rock church of St Basil survives within the town. Since about 2000, many of Uçhisar's old carved-stone houses have become boutique hotels, and the town now depends almost entirely on tourism.

Did you know? The name Uçhisar means 'outer citadel' in Turkish and refers to the great central rock. A folk reading hears 'üç', meaning three, and invents three castles, but that story is not the sourced meaning.
