About Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise)

A domed rock-cut chapel whose single tiny window kept its New Testament frescoes so dark they never faded, which is exactly why they survive as Cappadocia's best-preserved painted interior.

The Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise) is a rock-cut, domed chapel that formed part of an eleventh-century monastery complex inside the Göreme Open-Air Museum. Built on a closed Greek-cross plan, four columns support a central dome above a main apse and two side apses. Its walls and domes carry a full New Testament cycle, including Christ Pantocrator, the Nativity, the Adoration of the Magi, the Last Supper, the Betrayal, the Crucifixion and the Anastasis, painted in blues, reds and gold and widely regarded as the best-preserved frescoes in Cappadocia.

The church takes its name from its single small narthex window, which admits so little daylight that the pigments never faded. After the region passed to Turkish control, the chapel served as a dovecote until around the 1950s, and its paintings were later cleaned during an extended restoration. It is carved into the same rock mass as the neighbouring Çarıklı (Sandal) Church and requires a separate ticket, which helps fund conservation and limit visitor numbers.

Did you know? The church is dark for a plain architectural reason: a single small window in the narthex is the only source of natural light, leaving the whole interior in permanent, colour-saving gloom.
