About Zelve Open-Air Museum
A cave town spread across three tuff valleys, lived in until 1952, with churches, dovecotes, a rock-cut mill and a small mosque hollowed from the same soft cliffs.
The Zelve Open-Air Museum is a cave settlement carved into the tuff across three adjoining valleys on the northern slopes of Aktepe, between Ürgüp and Avanos, about a kilometre from Paşabağ. At its core is the Zelve Monastery, a Byzantine complex hollowed from the rock in pre-iconoclastic times, and the valley served as a monastic retreat between roughly the ninth and thirteenth centuries. Unlike Göreme, its churches lack rich figural frescoes and are decorated mainly with high-relief crosses.
Beyond its churches, the site holds houses, a rock-cut mill, several dovecotes and a small rock-cut mosque, evidence that Zelve was later a Muslim as well as an earlier Christian settlement. It was inhabited continuously until 1952, when erosion and rockfalls forced the last residents to relocate to the nearby town of Yeni Zelve. Zelve became an open-air museum in 1967.
