About Avanos
Avanos sits where the Kızılırmak, the longest river running entirely within Turkey, bends past town, and its red silt becomes the clay that has kept local potters busy for centuries.
Avanos is a town and district in Nevşehir Province, in the Cappadocia region of Central Anatolia, roughly 18 kilometres north of Nevşehir and about 920 metres above sea level. It stands on the banks of the Kızılırmak, known in Greek antiquity as the Halys. The river's Turkish name means "Red River," after the reddish silt it carries, and at around 1,355 kilometres it is described as the longest river flowing entirely within Turkey. The town's ancient name was Venessa.
Avanos is best known for pottery. Local workshops use clay taken from the river's red silt, and the craft is traditionally said to reach back to Hittite times, though this is a repeated attribution rather than a firmly dated lineage. The surrounding area also holds a network of small underground shelters whose carving is thought to have begun early, though no documented evidence fixes the dates.
Did you know? The river's name, Kızılırmak, simply means "Red River," for the reddish silt it carries. At about 1,355 kilometres it is the longest river flowing entirely within Turkey, though the Euphrates runs longer overall.
