About Paşabağ (Monks Valley)
A small valley near Zelve famous for multi-capped 'mushroom' fairy chimneys with two or three heads, and a three-headed pillar holding a rock-cut chapel dedicated to St Simeon.
Paşabağ, also called Monks Valley or Hermits' Valley, lies near the Zelve Open-Air Museum on the Göreme-Avanos road, and a single ticket covers both sites. It is known for some of Cappadocia's most striking fairy chimneys: cones topped not by a single cap but by two or even three separate heads, a multi-capped mushroom form that is rare elsewhere in the region. These shapes form where more than one hard cap shelters the soft volcanic tuff beneath from erosion; the tallest pillars reach roughly ten to fifteen metres.
Early Christian hermit monks carved cells, chapels and dwellings into the pillars. One three-headed chimney holds a rock-cut chapel dedicated to St Simeon, reached by a narrow carved staircase and containing a hermit's cell and prayer niche. The chapel recalls the stylite tradition of ascetics who lived atop pillars. Paşabağ lies within the UNESCO-listed Rock Sites of Cappadocia.
Did you know? Paşabağ's chimneys are unusual for their multiple caps: where two or three hard blocks shelter one tuff column, each protects the rock beneath, producing cones with two or even three heads.
