About Ürgüp
An old wine town in the heart of Cappadocia, Ürgüp gathers under Temenni Hill, with the Three Beauties fairy chimneys standing just up the road toward Göreme.
Ürgüp is a town and district in Nevşehir Province, in the Cappadocia region of Central Anatolia, at an average elevation of about 1,044 metres. It was formerly known as Prokopion in Greek, Osiana in the Byzantine period, and Burgut Kalesi in Ottoman Turkish. Temenni Hill rises over the town center and carries an 1863 symbolic tomb commemorating the Seljuk ruler Rükneddin Kılıç Arslan IV, who died at Ürgüp.
The town has a long-established wine-growing industry; one report credits the local Turasan winery with about sixty percent of Cappadocia's wine. Just outside Ürgüp, on the road toward Göreme, stand the Three Beauties (Üç Güzeller) fairy chimneys, also called the Three Graces, the Three Sisters, or the Family. In 1924, under the Treaty of Lausanne population exchange, the town's Greek community was compelled to leave Turkey. As of 2022 the population was 24,647.
Did you know? A local legend attaches to the Three Beauties: a princess who loved a commoner, turned to stone with her mother and child. The chimneys are really natural tuff, capped and shielded by harder rock.
