About Ortahisar Castle
A tall cone of rock riddled with rooms rises in the middle of Ortahisar. Once a Byzantine refuge, its cool caves still store apples, onions, and citrus.
Ortahisar is a town in the Ürgüp District of Nevşehir Province, in the Cappadocia region, about 20 kilometres east of Nevşehir and roughly 1,200 metres above sea level. Its Turkish name means "Middle Castle," and its earlier Byzantine name was Potamía. At the center of the town rises a tall rock-cut castle known locally as Sivrikaya, given by Wikipedia as about 90 metres high, though other sources cite different figures. It is an example of the rock-cut architecture typical of Cappadocia and served as a refuge from attackers in Byzantine times.
Beyond the castle, Ortahisar's rock-cut caves are valued for their naturally stable temperatures throughout the year. They have long been used to store agricultural produce such as potatoes, apples, onions, and citrus fruits, and some produce, including citrus, is brought to Ortahisar from southern Turkey for long-term cold storage. The 2022 population was 3,086.
Did you know? Ortahisar means "Middle Castle." The name is often explained by the rock's position among the region's other fortresses, though that tidy story is folk etymology. Its Byzantine name was Potamía.
