About Pigeon Valley (Güvercinlik Vadisi)

A gorge between Uçhisar and Göreme whose soft tuff cliffs are honeycombed with carved dovecotes, built so villagers could harvest pigeon droppings to fertilise their fields and vineyards.

Pigeon Valley (Güvercinlik Vadisi) is a gorge running between the villages of Uçhisar and Göreme in Nevşehir Province, on the edge of Göreme National Park. It takes its name from the many pigeon houses, or dovecotes, that local people carved into the soft volcanic tuff of its cliffs. The tuff formed from ash erupted by Erciyes, Hasan and Göllü Dağ roughly nine to three million years ago; harder caps shelter the softer stone, so the valley keeps its cliffs and pinnacles through differential erosion.

Guano collected from the dovecotes was widely used to fertilise the region's fields, vineyards and orchards, a practice that continued into the 1970s. At the valley's western end rises Uçhisar Castle, a tufa outcrop about sixty metres high honeycombed with rooms used in Byzantine times. Today the valley is a popular downhill walking route, lying within the UNESCO-listed Rock Sites of Cappadocia.

Did you know? The dovecotes were working infrastructure, not decoration. Villagers gathered the accumulated pigeon guano and spread it on fields, vineyards and orchards as fertiliser, a homegrown farming practice that carried on here into the 1970s.
