About Göreme Open-Air Museum
A Byzantine monastic valley where entire churches, kitchens and dormitories were carved into soft volcanic rock, several chapels still lined with vivid frescoes of biblical scenes and haloed saints.
The Göreme Open-Air Museum is a former Byzantine monastic settlement carved into the soft volcanic tuff of a valley beside Göreme village in Nevşehir Province, Central Anatolia. It lies within the area inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985 as Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia. Christians settled the valley heavily between roughly the seventh and thirteenth centuries, hollowing out churches, chapels, refectories and dwellings; after the end of Iconoclasm in the ninth century, many chapels were decorated with figural frescoes of biblical scenes.
The museum ticket covers six principal rock-cut churches, the Tokalı (Buckle), Elmalı (Apple), St Barbara, Yılanlı (Snake), Karanlık (Dark) and Çarıklı (Sandal), along with the Nuns' and Monks' monasteries. The Tokalı Church, the largest, stands across the road below the entrance, its oldest chamber dating to the tenth century. The surrounding national-park designation was revoked in 2019, and the area is now managed by the Cappadocia Area Directorate.
