Rose Valley (Güllüdere) and Red Valley (Kızılçukur) are two adjoining valleys northeast of Göreme, usually walked together as part of the region's most popular hiking network. Their cliffs are banded in pink, rose and red, colours produced by iron-oxide layers within the volcanic tuff and intensified by the low sun of early morning and late afternoon. The valleys were shaped by the same differential erosion that formed Cappadocia's fairy chimneys.
Hidden in the cliffs are rock-cut Byzantine churches. The Haçlı Kilise, or Church of the Cross, is the most accessible, with a large carved Greek cross on its ceiling and traces of red-ochre painting; it is commonly dated to about the tenth or eleventh century. A separate church, the Kolonlu Kilise or Columned Church, has a nave articulated by rock-cut columns and faded frescoes of saints. Both lie within the UNESCO-listed Rock Sites of Cappadocia.
Did you know? The pink-and-red banding is genuine, not a trick of naming: iron-oxide layers stain the volcanic tuff. The low sun of early morning and late afternoon deepens the colour, making this a famous sunset spot.
