The Heidelberg route at a glance
Day 1
Day 1 covers 6 stops over about 2.4 km as the crow flies, from Jesuit Church (Jesuitenkirche) to Philosophenweg (Philosophers' Way). ≈ 2.4 km between stops, straight line
Morning
- Jesuit Church (Jesuitenkirche): An 18th-century baroque Jesuit church in the Old Town, dedicated to the Holy Spirit and St Ignatius, known for its bright white hall interior and a Museum of Sacred Art. 0.1 km to the next stop
- Alte Universität (Old University): The baroque heart of a university founded in 1386 and often called Germany's oldest. Inside wait the grand Alte Aula and the walls of a graffiti-scrawled student jail. 0.2 km to the next stop
- Heidelberg Old Town (Altstadt): Heidelberg's baroque Old Town below the castle, threaded by the roughly 1.8-kilometre Hauptstrasse pedestrian street and dotted with historic churches, squares and institutions of the 1386 university. 0.2 km to the next stop
Afternoon
- Kurpfälzisches Museum: Heidelberg's museum of art and archaeology in the baroque Palais Morass. It holds a cast of the Heidelberg Man jaw, a Riemenschneider altar and centuries of Palatinate paintings. 1 km to the next stop
- Neckarwiese: Heidelberg's favourite riverside lawn on the north bank, about five hectares of grass. Locals gather here to picnic beneath a wide view across to the Old Town and castle. 0.9 km to the next stop
- Philosophenweg (Philosophers' Way): A hillside promenade on the far bank of the Neckar, facing the castle and Old Town. Its famous panorama, mild little garden and steep Snake Path reward the crossing.
Day 2
Day 2 covers 6 stops over about 3 km as the crow flies, from Old Bridge (Alte Bruecke) to Königstuhl. ≈ 3 km between stops, straight line
Morning
- Old Bridge (Alte Bruecke): An 18th-century Neckar-sandstone arch bridge below the Old Town, the ninth on its site, known for its twin gate towers and the bronze Brueckenaffe, the good-luck bridge monkey. 0.2 km to the next stop
- Church of the Holy Spirit (Heiliggeistkirche): A Gothic church of 1398 to 1515 on the Marktplatz, once the Electors Palatine burial church and home to the Bibliotheca Palatina, its stalls and climbable tower still active. 0.2 km to the next stop
- Kornmarkt: A small Old-Town square below the castle, centred on the baroque Kornmarktmadonna fountain of 1718 and celebrated as a classic viewpoint for photographing Schloss Heidelberg on the slope above. 0.5 km to the next stop
Afternoon
- Karlstor: A free-standing triumphal arch that has closed the east end of the Old Town since 1781. Built by grateful citizens for the Elector Karl Theodor, modelled on a Roman gate. 0.4 km to the next stop
- Heidelberg Castle: A red-sandstone Renaissance ruin standing high above the Old Town, wrecked by war and lightning yet never rebuilt, home to the Great Vat and the German Apothecary Museum. 1.6 km to the next stop
- Königstuhl: The hill Heidelberg looks up to, given as 567.8 metres and climbed by a historic funicular. Its summit holds an old observatory, TV towers and a long valley view.
Distances are straight-line between stops; streets add a little.
