About Jesuit Church (Jesuitenkirche)

An 18th-century baroque Jesuit church in the Old Town, dedicated to the Holy Spirit and St Ignatius, known for its bright white hall interior and a Museum of Sacred Art.

The Jesuitenkirche is a baroque Roman Catholic church in Heidelberg's Old Town, dedicated to the Holy Spirit and St Ignatius and known for its bright white interior. A three-aisled hall church of local sandstone, it has a nave of five bays and a choir of two. Groundbreaking took place on 19 April 1712, the birthday of Elector Johann Wilhelm, to plans by Johann Adam Breunig; work halted in 1717 and resumed in 1749 under Franz Wilhelm Rabaliatti, with completion in 1759.

The tower and facade were added later, between 1868 and 1872, in a neo-baroque style. The church was built for the Jesuit order, recalled to Heidelberg in 1698 to support the re-Catholicisation of the Palatinate after the dynastic change to the Catholic Pfalz-Neuburg line. It now houses the Museum of Sacred Art and Liturgy and has two organs by the Swiss builder Kuhn, a main organ of 2009 and a choir organ of 2014.
