About Kornmarkt
A small Old-Town square below the castle, centred on the baroque Kornmarktmadonna fountain of 1718 and celebrated as a classic viewpoint for photographing Schloss Heidelberg on the slope above.
The Kornmarkt is a small square in Heidelberg's Old Town, set just below the Burgweg footpath that climbs to the castle and offering a classic view up to Schloss Heidelberg. At its centre stands the Kornmarktmadonna, a baroque Marian column with a gilded statue of the Virgin above a three-basin fountain, created by Peter van den Branden in 1718. The square is one of the Old Town's most popular viewpoints for photographing the castle.
The site was previously occupied by the Heilig-Geist-Spital, a hospital that stood there from the 13th century until it was demolished around 1557 to create a market; the name Kornmarkt, or grain market, became established by the late 17th century. The Palais Graimberg stands at the southeast corner, the former Prinz Carl on the west, and the Rathaus just to the north, while the lower station of the Heidelberger Bergbahn funicular is nearby.
