About Philosophenweg (Philosophers' Way)
A hillside promenade on the far bank of the Neckar, facing the castle and Old Town. Its famous panorama, mild little garden and steep Snake Path reward the crossing.
The Philosophenweg is a walking path on the slope of the Heiligenberg, on the north bank of the Neckar in Heidelberg's Neuenheim district. Running about two kilometres, it faces the Old Town, Heidelberg Castle and the Königstuhl from across the river, and is known above all for its panorama over the Neckar, the town's rooftops and, on clear days, the Upper Rhine Plain. Partway along lies the Philosophengärtchen, a small terraced garden with a notably mild microclimate where Mediterranean plants such as palms grow.
The name came into use in the early nineteenth century during the era of Heidelberg Romanticism, though its exact origin is uncertain and is variously explained. Memorials along the route honour the poets Eichendorff and Hölderlin, and buildings of Heidelberg University's physics institutes stand beside the path. The walk can be reached gently from the Neuenheim side or by the steep, stepped Schlangenweg that climbs from near the Alte Brücke.
Did you know? The name only appeared in the early nineteenth century. One story credits deep-thinking professors; another says Philosophen was just student slang for those studying the liberal arts. Nobody has ever settled it.
