About Church of the Holy Spirit (Heiliggeistkirche)
A Gothic church of 1398 to 1515 on the Marktplatz, once the Electors Palatine burial church and home to the Bibliotheca Palatina, its stalls and climbable tower still active.
The Heiliggeistkirche, or Church of the Holy Spirit, stands on the Marktplatz at the centre of Heidelberg's Old Town. A Gothic church with Romanesque elements, it was built between 1398 and 1515, with the choir consecrated in 1411 and the nave completed in 1441. It served as the burial and representative church of the Electors Palatine, though only the tomb of its founder, Elector Ruprecht III, survived the War of the Palatine Succession. The Gothic tower burned in 1693 and was rebuilt with a baroque top in 1709.
The church once housed the celebrated Bibliotheca Palatina in galleries within the nave; during the Thirty Years' War, in 1622 and 1623, the library was taken to Rome and absorbed into the Vatican Library, and 847 German manuscripts were returned in 1816. From 1706 a partition wall divided the church between Catholic and Protestant use until its reported removal in 1936. Market stalls line the exterior, and the tower offers a viewing platform reached by 208 steps.
