About Heidelberg Castle

A red-sandstone Renaissance ruin standing high above the Old Town, wrecked by war and lightning yet never rebuilt, home to the Great Vat and the German Apothecary Museum.

Schloss Heidelberg is a ruined Renaissance castle set on the northern slope of the Koenigstuhl, roughly 80 metres above the Old Town and built largely of red Neckar-valley sandstone. Its surviving wings include the richly sculpted Ottheinrichsbau, a celebrated Renaissance facade, and the better-preserved Friedrichsbau. French forces burned the castle in 1689 and blew up parts in 1693, and a lightning strike in 1764 ended attempts to restore it as a residence.

Inside, the Fassbau holds the Great Vat, an enormous wine barrel commonly said to hold around 219,000 litres, while the eastern section houses the German Apothecary Museum. The ruin became a touchstone of German Romanticism, drawing artists and writers from the late 18th century onward. It is reached on foot or by the Heidelberger Bergbahn funicular from the Kornmarkt, and the courtyard, vat and museum are open on a paid ticket.

Did you know? The Great Vat is commonly said to hold around 219,000 litres, with the 1751 barrel sometimes cited near 221,726 litres and reputedly built from about 130 oak trees; a dance floor sits on top.
