About Heidelberg

Heidelberg is the town that launched a thousand postcards. A rambling red-sandstone castle, half-ruined, stands on a wooded slope above the river Neckar, looking down on a compact old town of baroque roofs. For the German Romantics this was the ideal view, and two centuries later it still draws crowds up the hill to see it.

The old town below is long and narrow, squeezed between the river and the hills. Its spine is the Hauptstraße, a pedestrian street that runs for well over a kilometre past the market square and the Gothic Church of the Holy Spirit. At the river, the 18th-century Old Bridge crosses to the far bank, guarded by a pair of towers and a small bronze monkey that visitors love to touch.

For centuries Heidelberg was the seat of the Palatine electors, and the castle was their grand residence. Then war and lightning did their work: French armies wrecked it in the 1690s, a bolt of lightning finished part of it in 1764, and it was never fully rebuilt. What was left became the most famous ruin in Germany. The town is also home to the country's oldest university, founded in 1386, which keeps it young and full of students.

There are really two Heidelbergs to see, and they face each other. On the castle side you can climb up to the terraces, peer into the enormous Great Vat wine barrel, and look out over the rooftops. On the other bank, the Philosophers' Way path gives the classic postcard view straight back at the castle, and the Königstuhl hill rises behind, reached by an old funicular.

It is an easy place to like and an easy place to walk. Stroll the Hauptstraße, cross the Old Bridge at dusk, and join the students on the Neckarwiese meadow when the sun is out. Then find the path up to the castle, and start climbing.

Heidelberg Castle

The Great Vat is commonly said to hold around 219,000 litres, with the 1751 barrel sometimes cited near 221,726 litres and reputedly built from about 130 oak trees; a dance floor sits on top.

Old Bridge (Alte Bruecke)

Heidelberg Old Town (Altstadt)

The Hauptstrasse has been a through-route since about 1220 and has carried its name since 1689; pedestrianisation began in 1969 and was completed on 30 September 1978, ending decades of street traffic.
