The Kurpfälzisches Museum is Heidelberg's museum of art and archaeology, housed in the baroque Palais Morass on the Hauptstraße. It grew from the private collection of Charles de Graimberg, which the city purchased in the late 1870s. The building is generally credited to the architect Johann Adam Breunig and named for its first owner, the jurist Johann Philipp von Morass. Its collections span paintings from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries, Roman archaeology and a reconstructed mithraeum, sculpture, applied arts and large holdings of drawings and prints.
In the archaeology section is a cast of the lower jaw of Homo heidelbergensis; the original, found at Mauer near Heidelberg, is kept elsewhere as a scientific specimen. Highlights include Tilman Riemenschneider's Altar of the Twelve Apostles of 1509, portraits of Frederick V, Liselotte von der Pfalz and Perkeo, and works linked to Rogier van der Weyden and Lucas Cranach the Elder.
Did you know? The famous Heidelberg Man jaw here is a cast, not the real thing. The original mandible, unearthed at nearby Mauer in 1907, is kept elsewhere as a scientific specimen. The museum shows a faithful copy.
