The Königstuhl is a hill in the Odenwald rising above Heidelberg in Baden-Württemberg. Its summit is given as 567.8 metres above sea level, a figure often rounded to about 568, and it overlooks the Old Town and the Neckar valley from the south. On clear days the view reaches toward the Palatinate Forest, roughly forty to fifty kilometres away. The classic ascent is the Heidelberger Bergbahn, a two-section funicular that stops at Heidelberg Castle and Molkenkur before the summit.
The summit has long served science. The Landessternwarte, or State Observatory, was established in 1898, and the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy stands nearby; from the observatory Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth discovered almost 400 asteroids between 1912 and 1957. Telecommunications structures, including the Fernsehturm television tower, share the peak. The upper funicular section, from Molkenkur to the top, is the older, historic part.
