Heidelberg University was founded in 1386 on the initiative of Rupert I, Elector Palatine, after Pope Urban VI granted permission the previous year. It is frequently described as the oldest university in present-day Germany, a qualified claim, since older German foundations did not remain in continuous operation. The baroque Alte Universität on Universitätsplatz, built between 1712 and 1728 and first known as the Domus Wilhelmiana, stands between the square and the Hauptstraße in the Old Town.
The building holds the Alte Aula, the Great Hall redesigned in 1886 for the university's 500th anniversary, and the historic Studentenkarzer, a student jail whose walls are covered with graffiti left by detained students. A University Museum opens the Great Hall and the former jail to visitors. The Neue Universität faces the same square, and the University Library ranks among the university's principal historic institutions.
