About Karlstor

A free-standing triumphal arch that has closed the east end of the Old Town since 1781. Built by grateful citizens for the Elector Karl Theodor, modelled on a Roman gate.

The Karlstor is a free-standing triumphal arch marking the eastern end of Heidelberg's Old Town, where it has stood since 1781. Built in stages between 1775 and 1781, it honours the Elector Karl Theodor and was conceived as a gift of thanks from the citizens of Heidelberg. Designed by Nicolas de Pigage in the form of a Roman triumphal arch, it replaced an earlier inner gate, the Jakobspforte, and stands on the long axis of the Hauptstraße running from Bismarckplatz through the town.

The external sculptural work is usually attributed to Peter Simon Lamine, though the credit is not firmly settled. The east side bears the Elector's coat of arms flanked by two lions, while the west side carries portrait medallions of Karl Theodor and his wife, generally identified as Elisabeth Auguste. Just east of the gate is the former Karlstor railway station, now the Karlstorbahnhof cultural centre and the Heidelberg-Altstadt station.

Did you know? The gate was a thank-you present. The citizens of Heidelberg built it between 1775 and 1781 to honour their Elector, Karl Theodor, and Nicolas de Pigage shaped it as a Roman triumphal arch.
