About Chișinău
Welcome to Chișinău, the capital of Moldova, a green city of parks and wide boulevards on the river Bâc. It is not a city of grand monuments, but of everyday life: busy markets, shady parks, Soviet-era apartment blocks and nineteenth-century houses side by side, and around it, the gentle hills and vineyards of a country with a long tradition of wine.
Chișinău is first recorded in the fifteenth century as a small village of the Principality of Moldavia. In 1812 the land between the Prut and the Dniester, called Bessarabia, became part of the Russian Empire, and Chișinău grew into its capital, with a new street plan, a cathedral and a triumphal arch. The poet Alexander Pushkin lived here from 1820 to 1823.
The twentieth century brought great suffering. In 1903 a pogrom killed dozens of the city's Jews, and during the Second World War its large Jewish community was almost wiped out. The city was badly damaged in the war and by earthquakes, and under Soviet rule many people were deported. Since 1991 Chișinău has been the capital of independent Moldova.
We will visit the Cathedral of Christ's Nativity and the Triumphal Arch, Stephen the Great Park, the national museums of history and of ethnography, the Central Market, Valea Morilor park, the Pushkin House and the Eternity memorial. Then we will go underground into the wine cellars of Cricova and Mileștii Mici, and out to the cliffs of Orheiul Vechi and the monastery of Căpriana.
The centre is easy to walk, and trolleybuses and minibuses cover the city. The wineries and monasteries need a car or a tour, and the wine cellars must be booked in advance. Welcome to Chișinău.
