About Orheiul Vechi

Orheiul Vechi, a dramatic bend of the Răut river north of Chișinău, with a cave monastery carved into the limestone cliffs and the ruins of Golden Horde and medieval Moldavian towns.

On this river bend stood a Getic fortress, the 14th-century Golden Horde town of Shehr al-Jedid and the medieval Moldavian town of Orhei, abandoned in the 16th century. Monks carved cells and a church into the cliffs, and a few monks live there again today.

A steep path leads to the cave church above Butuceni village, beside a bell tower of 1890. A small museum shows finds from the old towns. It is a working monastery: dress modestly and wear sturdy shoes.

Did you know? In the 14th century the Golden Horde founded a town called Shehr al-Jedid, the New City, at Orheiul Vechi, with a stone citadel and baths.
