About Căpriana Monastery
Căpriana Monastery in the Codri forest north-west of Chișinău, recorded by 1429 under Prince Alexander the Good, closed in Soviet times and reopened in 1989.
A charter of 1429 from Alexander the Good, Prince of Moldavia, already mentions the monastery. Its Dormition church was rebuilt in 1542-1545 by Prince Petru Rareș, and Metropolitan Gavriil Bănulescu-Bodoni, who restored it in the 19th century, is buried here.
Soviet authorities closed the monastery in 1962, and it reopened in 1989. Today three churches stand among woods and a pond, with a small museum. It is a working monastery: dress modestly and be quiet during services.
