About Cathedral of Christ's Nativity
The Cathedral of Christ's Nativity, the neoclassical main cathedral of the Moldovan Orthodox Church, built in 1830-1836 in Cathedral Park, with a bell tower rebuilt after 1962.
The architect Avraam Melnikov designed the cathedral as a cube with four columned porticoes and a dome full of light. Its bell tower was blown up in 1962 under Soviet rule, and in those years the cathedral was used as an exhibition hall.
It returned to worship in 1989, was restored in the 1990s and has a new bell tower built from old photographs. It is a working cathedral: dress modestly and be quiet during services. The park around it is free.
