About Triumphal Arch (Holy Gates)

The Triumphal Arch of Chișinău, also called the Holy Gates, built around 1840-1841 to mark a Russian victory over the Ottomans and to hold the cathedral's great bell.

Luka Zaușkevici designed the arch as a gate and belfry at the entrance to the cathedral square. It commemorates the Russian Empire's victory in the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829 and once held a great bell said to be cast from captured cannon.

The arch is about 13 metres high, with Corinthian columns and a clock. It stands on one axis with the cathedral and the Government House. It is free to see at any time; restoration is planned, so scaffolding may appear.
