About Rhodes

Rhodes may wear more history than almost anywhere its size on earth. In a single sun-baked walled city you can walk from a vanished Wonder of the ancient world, through the last great stronghold of the crusading knights, past Ottoman minarets and into an Italian colonial dream, without ever leaving the Old Town. Most of it is still lived in.

The through-line is the sun. This was the island of Helios, the sun-god, and to honour him the Rhodians raised the Colossus, a bronze giant some thirty metres tall, one of the Seven Wonders, until an earthquake brought it down. Fifteen centuries later the Knights of Saint John seized the island and made it a fortress-state, holding out two hundred years until Suleiman the Magnificent battered his way in. Then came the Ottomans, and the Italians, who ruled for thirty years and rebuilt much of the town into the medieval fantasy you see today.

The result is one of the largest inhabited medieval cities in Europe, and a joy to be lost in. Cobbled lanes twist between honey-coloured stone, cats doze on doorsteps, and the bazaar of Socrates Street climbs toward a mosque. You can walk the dry moat right around the walls without a car in sight, then flop at a taverna as the swifts scream overhead. The island's other gift is simple: sunshine, more than almost anywhere in Greece.

A few things stay with you. The Street of the Knights climbs in almost untouched medieval silence, one of the best-preserved of its kind anywhere. At the top, the Palace of the Grand Master hides a strange secret about who it was rebuilt for. And down at Mandraki, two bronze deer stand where legend wrongly insists the Colossus once straddled the harbour mouth.

Give the Old Town a full evening, once the day-trippers have gone and the lanes empty. The stone glows amber, a bell or a call to prayer sounds, and behind one quiet square the oldest synagogue in Greece keeps the memory of a community deported in the war. Rhodes has been fought over for millennia simply because it is lovely. Stay past sunset to understand why. Start walking.

What to see in Rhodes: all 18 stops

Every place below has its own narrated story in the app, and its own answers when you want more. Walk them in any order; the map shows what is around you.

  1. Marine Gate (Sea Gate)

The Knights' grand sea entrance of 1478: two battlemented round towers and a facade of heraldry that looked ready to stop an army but was mostly magnificent theatre.

    historic · ~30 min visit

  2. Street of the Knights (Odos Ippoton)

A cobbled two-hundred-metre climb lined with the inns of the Knights' nations, so flawlessly Gothic it looks staged, and in part it is: the 1930s Italians restored it.

    historic · ~30 min visit

  3. Archaeological Museum of Rhodes

Ancient marble gods fill the Knights' vast Gothic hospital ward, from the crouching Aphrodite of Rhodes to a Helios head that later became an unlikely vaporwave-album icon.

    museum · ~90 min visit

  4. Palace of the Grand Master

A towering medieval palace that is really a 1937-40 Italian reconstruction, rebuilt as a Fascist holiday residence for Mussolini and the king, though it is unclear either ever stayed.

    palace · ~60 min visit

  5. City Walls and Moat of Rhodes

A four-kilometre ring of Knights' walls above a broad dry moat that never held water and is now a grassy public park hosting concerts and open-air events.

    historic · ~45 min visit

  6. Süleymaniye Mosque

Rose-pink plaster marks the top of Sokratous Street, where the Old Town's first Ottoman mosque still crowns the market, admired from outside since its doors closed in 2014.

    religious · ~30 min visit

  7. Roloi Clock Tower

Climb the Old Town's oldest clock tower, still run by a Vienna-made mechanism, for a rooftop panorama over the Palace, the mosque, the walls and the harbour.

    monument · ~30 min visit

  8. Socrates Street (Odos Sokratous)

The Old Town's main market lane climbs between Hippocrates Square and the Mosque of Suleiman, packed with jewellers, sandal-makers and leather stalls in an old Ottoman trading tradition.

    market · ~45 min visit

  9. Hippocrates Square (Plateia Ippokratous)

The Old Town's lively heart, where cafes ring an ornamental fountain below the Knights' old courthouse, just inside the Marine Gate where every main lane converges and pigeons gather.

    square · ~30 min visit

  10. Byzantine Museum (Panagia tou Kastrou)

The oldest church in the Old Town: a Byzantine chapel remade as a Gothic cathedral, then a mosque, now home to Rhodes' Byzantine museum of icons and wall-paintings.

    museum · ~60 min visit

  11. Kahal Shalom Synagogue

Founded in 1577, the oldest surviving synagogue in Greece anchors the old Jewish Quarter and, beside the Square of the Jewish Martyrs, keeps the memory of a lost community.

    religious · ~45 min visit

  12. Mandraki Harbour

The town's smaller northern harbour, where bronze deer, restored medieval windmills and a famous legend about a straddling bronze giant crowd one short stretch of glittering, boat-filled water.

    landmark · ~45 min visit

  13. Nea Agora (New Market)

A seven-sided 1920s market hall built under Italian rule, its domes and Orientalist gateways wrapped around a lively arcaded courtyard that still trades in bread, fish and coffee.

    market · ~30 min visit

  14. Church of the Annunciation (Evangelismos)

A Gothic church built in the 1920s to replace one lost in 1856, now the Orthodox cathedral of Rhodes, presiding over Mandraki with frescoes by Fotis Kontoglou.

    religious · ~30 min visit

  15. Fort of St Nicholas

A compact, round Knights-era sea fort at the tip of the Mandraki mole, its lighthouse still marking the harbour mouth, and part-funded long ago by a Burgundian duke.

    castle · ~45 min visit

  16. Rhodes Aquarium (Hydrobiological Station)

A striking 1930s Italian research institute shaped like a ship at the island's northern cape, its cave-like basement aquarium holding Mediterranean sea life where two seas meet.

    nature · ~60 min visit

  17. Acropolis of Rhodes

The open, unwalled acropolis of ancient Rhodes on breezy Monte Smith, where re-erected Apollo columns, a long restored stadium and a small marble odeon overlook the town.

    ruins · ~90 min visit

  18. Acropolis of Lindos

A cliff-top sanctuary of Athena 116 metres above a whitewashed, car-free village, roughly 50 kilometres south of Rhodes Town: a temple, a Hellenistic colonnade and a knights' castle.

    ruins · ~90 min visit

Three things most visitors miss

Marine Gate (Sea Gate)

The gate's carved relief is still debated. Some read it as the Virgin and Child flanked by Saint John the Baptist and Saint Peter; others see Saint Catherine looking down on new arrivals.

Street of the Knights (Odos Ippoton)

The street's stone facades were the inns of the Order's 'tongues', its national branches. France, Provence, Auvergne, Italy, Aragon, England and Germany each kept a lodge here; the Inn of France survives best.

Archaeological Museum of Rhodes

A marble Head of Helios in the collection went viral far from Rhodes: it appeared on the 2011 cover of Macintosh Plus's vaporwave album 'Floral Shoppe' and became an internet-culture icon.
