About Marine Gate (Sea Gate)
The Knights' grand sea entrance of 1478: two battlemented round towers and a facade of heraldry that looked ready to stop an army but was mostly magnificent theatre.
The Marine Gate (Pyli Thalassini, or Sea Gate) was the principal entrance into the walled town of Rhodes from its commercial harbour. Built in 1478 under Grand Master Pierre d'Aubusson, it is flanked by two massive round towers crowned with battlements, fitted with machicolations and a slot for a portcullis. Above the pointed-arch entrance are a carved figural relief and the heraldic coats of arms of the King of France at the centre, the Order of St John, and d'Aubusson himself.
Despite its formidable appearance, the gate was more ceremonial than defensive: the narrow strip of ground between the walls and the harbour left no room for a besieging army to encamp before it. The Ottoman siege of 1480 came just two years after its construction. The gate forms part of the roughly four-kilometre Hospitaller wall circuit within the Medieval City of Rhodes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1988.
Did you know? The gate's carved relief is still debated. Some read it as the Virgin and Child flanked by Saint John the Baptist and Saint Peter; others see Saint Catherine looking down on new arrivals.
